CONTROL Resonant Ignite or Inferno — Which Is Better?

Launch verified Updated Oct 7, 2026

After you beat The Deserter in the Patterned Factory (Central), The Gap asks you to pick one fire Combat Ability: Ignite or Inferno. Same fork whether you searched Ignite vs Inferno, Inferno or Ignite, or “is Ignite better.” The story continues either way — the pick only changes how you deal fire damage and spend Power.

CONTROL Resonant Ignite vs Inferno comparison — fire buff on attacks versus fire-wave Inferno ability
Ignite vs Inferno — The Deserter fire ability choice
Verdict — is Ignite or Inferno better? Ignite is better for most players. It adds Fire damage and Burn to the attacks you already use. Take Inferno only if you want a standalone fire-wave nuke and have Power to spare. You can change later at The Gap.

Menu numbers scale with Ability Strength — reported ballparks vary (~20–39 bonus Fire / ~5 Falter / ~150 Power + drain for Ignite; ~126–158 Fire / ~11–13 Falter / ~150–200 Power for Inferno). Use in-game tooltips at The Gap for your exact values.

How to get Ignite or Inferno

  1. Reach Central and open the Patterned Factory (north / northwest of the Field Office) — quest log: The Central Resonant.
  2. Take the cargo lift down, clear the heat route (destroy the three heat growths / tumors on the pipes).
  3. Defeat The Deserter (break the magma sacs in the final phase so it cannot heal).
  4. Finish the Gap reward sequence and choose Ignite or Inferno.

Full fight: Deserter boss guide. The Deserter is required for story progress (Enemy of My Enemy gate) and the Thermal Termination trophy — see where to go next.

What Ignite does (fire damage buff)

Ignite is a toggle. While active, melee hits plus Barrage, Shield, and Volatile Anomaly deal bonus Fire damage and apply Burn, with an upfront Power cost and a Power drain per second.

  • Best when you already like your Aberrant / melee loop — turn it on and keep fighting
  • Strong into Mold-heavy zones (The Park and later) — The Park
  • Clears mold Ability Barriers while the buff is active

What Inferno does (fire-wave ability)

Inferno is a dedicated active: waves of fire that deal Fire damage, Falter, and Burn without modifying weapon hits.

  • Better when Burn is the center of your offense and you have Power to spare
  • Competes with Barrage / Ground Slam / other actives for the same Power meter
  • Also burns mold Ability Barriers in one cast

How to use fire / apply Burn

  • Ignite: activate the toggle, then hit with melee or the listed abilities — Burn builds from those attacks
  • Inferno: cast near enemies for fire waves and Burn buildup
  • Both clear mold barriers; fire also shreds Mold enemies in The Park / Collective routes
  • Pair with Burn-friendly talents and builds — best builds (default path: Barrage → Ground Slam → Ignite)

Power economy

Ignite spreads cost over the fight (open + drain). Inferno spends in bursts. That is why Ignite usually feels better on a first clear, and Inferno only pulls ahead with a large Power pool and ability-first kits.

Can you get both Ignite and Inferno?

Each Resonant normally lets you pick one Combat Ability. Later, a Resonant Token from Pope’s Research (and Reset Items at the Mural in The Gap) lets you unlock or reshuffle — the extra unlock still competes with other Resonant abilities. Pick what you need now; you are not permanently locked out of the other forever.

Also unlocked with The Deserter

You also unlock the Lighter Artifact recipe (Burn resistance), Source, and a Reset Item. Boss tactics stay on the Deserter guide.

FAQ

Is Ignite or Inferno better in CONTROL Resonant?

Ignite is better for most players. Inferno is better only if you want a standalone fire nuke and can feed it Power.

Which Resonant has Ignite?

The Deserter (Central Resonant / Patterned Factory). Ignite and Inferno are the two fire rewards from that fight.

Is The Deserter mandatory?

Yes for main-story progress through Contain the Crisis (Enemy of My Enemy expects it) and for the fire Combat Ability. You can leave Central to upgrade first, but you must clear it to advance that gate.

Can I change Ignite vs Inferno later?

Yes — Reset Items at The Gap Mural, and later Pope’s Research Resonant Tokens for extra ability unlocks.

Looking for Mold abilities instead?

Spore Burst vs Growth is a different Resonant (The Collective) — Spore Burst or Growth.
